Moalboal, Cebu has emerged from the pandemic with a renewed energy. Gone are the days of limited choices. The town is now a haven for adventurous foodies, with heaps of new restaurants serving everything from Filipino favorites to fresh seafood and international cuisine.
The nightlife scene has shifted too. While Chilli Bar and Pacita’s remain beloved options, the main action now unfolds on Panagsama Road. Here, a strip of bars like Blue Mango Bar, Haze, and Smooth Coffee thrum with live music most nights, offering a vibrant atmosphere for those seeking an after-dark adventure.
Accommodation options have blossomed to cater to all budgets and tastes. Whether you seek a more luxurious resort or a cozy guesthouse, you’ll find the perfect place to unwind after a day of exploring.
And explore you will! Moalboal boasts a prime location, putting the best of Cebu within easy reach. All of the most stunning waterfalls, from Kawasan Falls to hidden gems like Dao Falls and Inambakan Falls, are a scenic moped ride away. Hikers will find a number of challenging and rewarding trails nearby, offering breathtaking views of the island.
The underwater world is your playground in Moalboal. Witness the mesmerizing sardine run and swim alongside green sea turtles, all literally on your doorstep. Craving an encounter with majestic whale sharks? Oslob is just a morning drive away.
This newfound vibrancy is attracting more visitors than ever before, especially on weekends and during peak season. Moalboal is no longer just a place to relax – it’s a place to indulge, explore, and create lasting memories. And with new restaurants, bars, and accommodations popping up all the time, the future of this charming town is even brighter.
The majority of individuals I encounter in Moalboal tend to only schedule 2 or 3 days here to witness the sardine run and experience Kawasan canyoneering. However, there’s so much more to explore beyond these activities. One could easily spend an entire week discovering new adventures in the southern region of Cebu.
🚌 How to get to Moalboal, Cebu
From Cebu City take a white-metered taxi to the South Bus Terminal for about 150 PHP and board a public yellow Ceres bus. Upon arriving at the South Bus Terminal, use Entrance 2. Purchase your ticket at the ticket counter for an air-conditioned bus and then head to Door 4. While there is no official bus schedule, buses depart approximately every 30 minutes, operating 24 hours a day.
The bus journey takes about 3.5 to 4 hours or more, with tickets costing around 209 PHP. Choose the larger, air-conditioned bus for a more comfortable ride (there are also smaller local buses with open windows). The bus will stop at the bus station in Moalboal.
Traveling from Cebu to Moalboal is predominantly served by Ceres Buses, with Sugba buses also operating on the same route. Both companies offer similar services to the same destination, so the choice of bus company doesn’t greatly impact your journey. The fare is generally consistent across both. Make sure to get on a bus that is marked as going via Barili and has Bato listed as its final destination. At each door, a ticket assistant is available to check your ticket and guide you accordingly.
Before stowing away larger luggage in the bus’s lower compartment, remember to remove any valuable items like laptops or cameras. Keeping these essentials in a smaller, more accessible bag is a wise precaution.
Roughly 45 minutes before reaching Moalboal, the bus makes a brief pause in Barili. This stop allows passengers to use the restroom (5 PHP) and purchase snacks. My preferred choice is Ube hopia. Vendors frequently board the bus at different stops to sell items like water and snacks. A vendor with a green bucket offers warm, spiced peanuts, a tasty treat for 20 PHP. In Car Car, vendors come on board selling crispy banana chips and the famous Chicharon for 35 PHP, a type of fried pork skin. Chicharon is made from thinly sliced pig skins, cooked and then deep-fried in hot oil, resulting in delicious pork rinds.
The bus journey will conclude at the bus station in Moalboal, which has two main stops: the first at Gaisano Grand Mall, and the second at Jollibee. For those traveling to the Panagsama area, it’s best to alight at the Jollibee stop. If your destination is towards White Beach, then the Gaisano Grand Mall stop is more convenient.
Upon arriving in Moalboal, you can take a tricycle to your destination. The fare to Panagsama is around 100 to 150 PHP, and a motorbike ride (habal-habal) costs about 50 PHP.
For a faster but more expensive option, consider taking a taxi directly from the Mactan airport to Moalboal.
A taxi journey from Mactan Airport to Moalboal typically costs between 2,500 and 3,500 PHP. It’s crucial to agree on the fare with the driver beforehand to ensure clarity. The drive usually takes around 3 hours, depending on traffic, and the cost can be shared among up to four passengers.
I’ve written a comprehensive guide detailing how to travel to and from Moalboal. You can check it out here. Traveling to and from Moalboal Cebu
In Barili, Cebu, buses make a quick pause, providing a practical chance for passengers to stretch their legs, use the restroom, and grab some quick snacks. From here it typically takes about 1 hour to reach Moalboal, depending on traffic.

“Vlad, where’s the top spot to dine in Moalboal?” This is a question I’m frequently asked by my guests. The reality is, that there’s no definitive answer because Moalboal’s food scene has blossomed with choices to cater to every palate. So, instead of a one-size-fits-all solution, let’s delve into Moalboal’s culinary delights based on your cravings.
Best Burgers – Betsy’s Grill and Restobar [Menu] in Moalboal is a crowd-pleaser, offering a delightful mix of Filipino favorites, barbecue, and – you guessed it – delicious burgers! (Americano, medium-rare is my preferred choice.) Some other excellent options for burgers would include: Island Tea Co. [Menu] and Three Bears Restaurant [Menu]
The Ultimate Burger from Island Tea Co. in Moalboal is a feast for the eyes and the taste buds. Stacked high with a juicy, perfectly grilled beef patty, fresh lettuce, ripe tomatoes, and melted cheese.
Pizza and Pasta – Trattoria Altrove Moalboal [Menu] This Italian restaurant is known for its authentic Italian cuisine, and its pizzas are a popular choice. Cooked in a wood-fired oven that creates a delightfully crispy crust with a touch of smoky char.

Best Seafood – Lola Tanciang’s Sutukil Seafood Paluto [Menu] is a haven for seafood enthusiasts. Dive into a dazzling display of the freshest daily catches. Some of my favorites are Grilled Pompano, Grilled Squid and Labster, and must try Ginataan Tahong Seafood Soup! Tan-Aw Restaurant also offers a fantastic seafood selection and features a scenic ocean view from its second floor.
Ginataang Tahong, a creamy Filipino mussel soup simmered in coconut milk with hints of garlic, ginger, and onions, topped with optional chili for a spicy kick. The grilled squid is stuffed with vegetables and grilled Pompano fish. Dishes from Lola Tanciang’s.

Other great Vegetarian and Vegan options are: Smooth Cafe, Hungry Vegan, Shaka Cafes, Bawud Cafe, and Achille Restobar

The Pochero soup from JG’s Grill in Moalboal is hailed as the best in town, offering a hearty and flavorful experience.
Taste of Europe – Le café Français offers a lot of excellent choices here!
- Appetizers: Tuna Tartare (with mango, especially), Mahi Mahi Carpaccio
- Main Courses: Steak (especially with truffle sauce), Beef Tenderloin, Shrimp dishes (various styles), Chicken dishes (especially with cream sauce), Fish (sea bream, blue marlin), Pork tenderloin with mustard sauce, Salmon carpaccio, Lasagna, Kinilaw

Top Breakfast Choices – Ô délices French Bakery [Menu] is my personal favorite breakfast spot! This charming bakery offers a slice of France right here in the Philippines. Great selection of freshly baked pastries, cakes, breads, sandwiches, imported cold cuts, cheeses, and wines. They offer breakfast options like omelets, egg benedict, or even French crepes. Sushi and Sashimi – Kugita Seafood & Charcoal Grill in Moalboal is a haven for seafood lovers and adventurous foodies. Their menu offers a delightful fusion of flavors, featuring classic dishes like sushi, sashimi, and tempura rolls alongside signature creations like their Tomahawk chops.
Street food, or what we call “carenderia” – in the Philippines, is a vibrant and integral part of the local culinary scene. These are small, family-run eateries that line sidewalks and corners, offering a delightful and affordable way to experience Filipino cuisine. They typically have a variety of pre-cooked dishes displayed in steaming trays, allowing you to choose what tempts you most much like a buffet. Simply point at the dishes you’d like, and the friendly staff will serve you a delicious and personalized meal. Despite their humble appearance, carenderias often serve up some of the tastiest and most authentic Filipino food you can find. Many locals and even tourists seek out carenderias to experience the true flavors of Filipino cuisine in a laid-back and unpretentious setting. One of the ones I recommend is Sula’s On The Go and there are multiple carenderiand at the back of the Moalboal Public Market, some of the must-try dishes are:

- Pinakbet – Vegetable stew with a mix of eggplant, squash, and pork.

The best time to grab a meal is between 8 AM and 1 PM, when the dishes are freshly cooked and brimming with flavor. After this window, the food often sits out for hours, which can affect its taste and quality.
A good rule of thumb: if it doesn’t look appetizing or smell inviting, trust your instincts and skip it.
